Tradition<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/app.spheriq.ch\/stiftungsverzeichnis\/stiftungen-ostschweiz\">the greater region of Eastern Switzerland<\/a>. Until 1597, it was part of the joint canton of Appenzell, along with Appenzell Innerrhoden. After the separation, it took several centuries for the canton to adopt its current, official name. This history and the region\u2019s connection to nature shape both social life and the philanthropic sector in the region.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foundations in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The canton is characterized by its rolling hills, as well as by its customs and traditions. With sweeping views of Lake Constance, Appenzell Ausserrhoden is known for its many hiking trails. More than 20 themed hiking trails attract hiking enthusiasts from across the country, allowing them to experience the unique Appenzell customs time and again. Like its neighboring canton, <a href=\"https:\/\/spheriq.ch\/stiftungsverzeichnis\/stiftungen-appenzell-innerrhoden\/\">Appenzell Innerhoden<\/a>, tradition is deeply rooted in the way of life here: celebrated by over 55,000 residents across 20 municipalities with plenty of music, singing, and paintings.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sense of community is clearly evident in the region\u2019s charitable activities. At the end of 2025, Appenzell Ausserrhoden had <strong>116 foundations<\/strong> and <strong>,<\/strong> with <strong>20.3 foundations per 10,000 residents<\/strong>, ranked 9th nationally. Thus, despite its small size, the canton remains one of the regions in Switzerland with the highest density of foundations and demonstrates a remarkably strong commitment to charitable work within the local community.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foundation Landscape and Funding Purposes<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People live and celebrate in this region: from Alpfahrt, to Silvesterchlausen, to Bloch. With jewellery, traditional costumes and the culinary offerings, Appenzellerland shows its multifaceted side. In addition, the many local specialities such as Appenzell cheese, peasant paintings and handmade works of art make the 243 km2 canton proud.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foundations in Appenzell Ausserrhoden primarily support cultural and social projects with strong regional ties. Their focus is on preserving traditions, natural and cultural landscapes, and supporting local communities. The thematic priorities on the Spheriq platform lie primarily in the areas <strong>of art and culture<\/strong>, <strong>social issues<\/strong>, and <strong>education<\/strong>. In addition, individual foundations are also active in politics, society, and the economy, as well as in research and science.
