These receive thousands of applications, and the competition is fierce. However, smaller, lesser-known funding organizations that are a perfect fit for your project can also be interesting partners. They\u2019re harder to find, but fewer organizations apply to them.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In four steps, you can go from your initial search to a shortlist of promising funding partners. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"1-search-make-multiple-attempts-instead-of-just-one-search\"  class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Search: Make multiple attempts instead of just one search<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A single search rarely finds all relevant foundations.  Therefore, perform multiple searches using different terms: for a hospice, for example, use synonyms such as \u201cpalliative care\u201d and \u201cend of life,\u201d as well as broader topics like \u201chealth.\u201d Narrow down each search using the topic filter. As a rule of thumb, limit each search to no more than 500 results; otherwise, the results will become too overwhelming to review. Starting with the \u201cStarter\u201d plan, you can also filter by area of focus, target group, or canton. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The article <a href=\"https:\/\/spheriq.ch\/blog\/en\/finding-the-right-foundation-without-spending-hours-searching\/\">\u201cFinding the Right Foundation\u2014Without a Long Search\u201d shows you how to<\/a> search more precisely using search operators and filters. You\u2019ll find additional guidance in the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.spheriq.ch\/de\/articles\/178201-tipps-um-gute-suchergebnisse-zu-erhalten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips for good search results<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"2-reviewing-results-your-long-list\"  class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Reviewing Results: Your Long List<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Now go through the results. Start by taking just a quick look at the foundations you found. For each foundation, a brief review of three things is sufficient:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">Focus: Does the foundation\u2019s mission generally align with your project? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">Region: Does the foundation provide funding in the area where your project will be implemented?  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">Target audience: Are the people you want to reach among the potential beneficiaries?  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The key question here is: <strong>Could this be a good fit in principle? If there\u2019s a clear match or if you still have questions, add the foundation to your long list.<\/strong> It\u2019s better to include one too many than to eliminate one too soon. <strong>If a foundation is clearly ineligible, you can leave it off the list.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">For each foundation on the long list, briefly note the following:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Who:<\/strong> Contact information and, if available, a contact person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Why:<\/strong> Why she might be a good fit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>How:<\/strong> Application process and deadlines, to the extent they are already known. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That way, you\u2019ll still know in a few weeks why a foundation is on the list. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with the \u201cStarter\u201d plan, you can compile a list of interesting organizations directly from your search results and gradually add to your selection later. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"Definition-Zielgruppe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>3. Review and Select: Your Shortlist<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Now take a closer look at each foundation on the long list. Four questions will help you do this: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Application Process:<\/strong> Does the foundation even accept external applications? Some only carry out their own projects. Is there an application form or a deadline? Whether a foundation welcomes unsolicited applications is indicated in its Spheriq profile, if the foundation has specified this itself. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Funding criteria and exclusions:<\/strong> Does your project fall under \u201cWhat We Do Not Fund\u201d? For large foundations, the current funding priorities carry more weight than the foundation\u2019s general mission. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Funding History:<\/strong> Has the foundation previously supported similar organizations or projects? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Grant Amounts:<\/strong> Does the typical amount meet your needs? Some foundations award 2,000 CHF, others 200,000. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Many smaller foundations do not have their own websites. In that case, the profile on Spheriq is your most important source of information. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Now there are two key considerations: How well does the foundation fit your project?  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">How realistic is the prospect of receiving funding?  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with Pro, the \u201cFit\u201d and \u201cHope\u201d metrics help you with this. They provide an assessment of the thematic fit and the prospects for funding. The results help with prioritization but do not replace your own evaluation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Classify the foundations into A, B, and C: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">A \u2013 Particularly promising: Good fit, no apparent exclusions, and a suitable application process. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">B \u2013 Interesting: Generally a good fit, but important questions remain unanswered. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\">C \u2013 Backup: Significantly lower fit or unfavorable conditions. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">One question can help you make a decision: <strong>If I were this foundation, would I support our project?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Your shortlist should include 5 to 10 foundations: primarily those in Group A, supplemented as needed by the strongest candidates from Group B. Contact them or submit a grant application.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"digitale-Kan&#xE4;le\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>4. Make contact: where possible and appropriate<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Not every foundation wants to be contacted before a grant application is submitted. Whether it makes sense to reach out before submitting an application depends on how the foundation is organized: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>With an administrative office:<\/strong> You can identify them by their own website, which includes funding guidelines. The administrative office is usually happy to provide information; it\u2019s worth giving them a quick call or sending an email.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-20-font-size\"><strong>Without an administrative office:<\/strong> Small foundations or those managed by a trustee often do not have a website or a designated contact person. In these cases, send a complete application directly by mail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">If a foundation states that it does not wish to be contacted, it is best to respect that request.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When contacting us, keep it brief and to the point. Describe your project, the funding you\u2019re seeking, and any questions you\u2019d like to clarify before submitting your application. Always specify a specific amount. Anne Oesterlin explains how to turn this into a compelling application in her article \u201cWhat Makes a Good Application.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-20-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After each contact, make a note of what you\u2019ve learned and what comes next. She then reviewed the foundations\u2019 profiles to assess their mission, funding criteria, and exclusions. Instead of sending out mass mailings, she prepared individualized proposals. In this way, she identified and contacted about 15 foundations.
